What’s in my Cosmetic Travel Bag(s)?

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, skincare, Travel

I think packing is probably my least favorite thing to do. I don’t mind packing for short weekend trips, but weeklong overseas trips are kind of stressful. I’m pretty sure I watched every “pack with me” video on YouTube and yet I’m still stressed. Part of the reason I feel like I’m stressing is that I’m taking a duffel bag with me versus one of those cute little carry-on suitcases. Seriously, that would have helped tremendously! However, the duffel will have to work this time around.

One of the main things I didn’t really need to worry when it came to packing was my makeup, skincare, and other miscellaneous toiletries. On Saturday, I went to the closest Base Exchange with my dad and purchased all of the little travel minis (ibuprofen, body lotion, bobby pins, etc) that I needed. It’s kind of ridiculous how much cheaper things are on a military base compared to Target. Anywho, I picked up these 4 piece cosmetic cases to put all of my skincare and other non-liquid toiletries in.

cosmetic bag

Everything here is pretty self-explanatory. I included my setting sprays, primer, powder, and serum foundation because they fit perfectly in the bag I’m using. I mean that setting powder is pretty bulky and the bag is perfect because it stands upright, therefore I won’t have a bunch of powder all over the place.

skincare bag

Surprisingly this bag can fit all of these skincare items without being too bulky. I may have to put the toner in a clear bag for all the TSA stuff. I included my toothpaste (my toothbrush will go in here too) because I typically brush my teeth and then wash my face so why not put them together? I have body lotion hidden all over my luggage because ya girl gets ashy and I have no idea if the climate is going to be dry or not.

makeup bag

I’m really proud of what makeup I’m taking. I’m proud because this is basically my everyday makeup normally minus the eyelashes and substituting the Becca Foundation for my IT Cosmetics Serum Foundation (which I’m also taking.) I love that my everyday makeup is also my travel makeup. I’m sure if my skin were even clearer, I would have even less makeup!

So these are my cosmetic bag(s) travel essentials give or take a few things pictured. I’m starting to get really excited for my trip and I can’t wait to take pictures and blog about everything! Thanks for reading.

5 Skincare Practices I Stopped Doing

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, skincare, Uncategorized

Hi everybody, today I’m going to be talking about skincare today. I feel like its been kind of a while since I’ve talked about this topic. There are some skincare practices that I stopped doing earlier this year that has improved my skin SO much… I’m sure most of you know that I have lessened my dairy intake to reduce my cystic acne, but here are five more things I’ve stopped doing and what I do instead.

  1. Stopped washing my face in the mornings

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but my face typically isn’t dirty in the mornings. A few days after I began doing this, my skin improved greatly. Now what I do is rinse my face with lukewarm water and then tone to remove any dirt that may be present. If I do feel that my face isn’t all that clean, I will use a gentle cleanser like Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleanser or Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser.

IMG_3887

  1. Stopped Using Drugstore Brands

I actually stopped doing this a long time ago. Drugstore brands pretty much did nothing for my skin, in fact, I think they used to make my skin worse. No matter how many oil-free cleansers I would try my skin would always be oily and that was part of the problem. The right oils fight oil, you guys! Now I’m sure there are drugstore brands that work pretty well now and are packed full of moisture, but I’ve found my products now and don’t see myself returning back to drugstore products anytime soon.

fullsizeoutput_212

  1. Stopped using makeup wipes

Yes, I know this is a weird one. The main reason I stopped using makeup wipes is that they always left a sticky residue on my face and I felt like when I would use them my skin just wasn’t happy. Another reason I stopped using was that wiping, pulling and tugging my face to get makeup off probably wasn’t the best technique for my sensitive skin. So now I either use micellar water with a really soft cotton pad (Shiseido cotton pads) or I oil cleanse. Occasionally I’ll use those makeup towels to remove my makeup, but that kind of goes back to using makeup wipes – so I use it sparingly.

  1. Stopped using physical exfoliators

This kind of goes hand in hand with the makeup wipes. The pulling and tugging, as well as the scratching from microbeads, irritated my skin. Also, microbeads aren’t the best for the environment either. This also means I threw out my Clarisonic face brush. I saw no results with a face brush no matter how soft the bristles were. The only physical exfoliator I feel comfortable putting on my skin is charcoal or honey granules (Lush Dark Matter or Leahlani Honey Love) and also I’m extra careful with these when using. I even use chemical exfoliators pretty sparingly just because of how sensitive my skin is. At least for me, the more gentle, the better.

  1. Stopped using salicylic acid

I stopped using the end all be all acne treatment for acne prone skin?! Yes, I certainly did. Every skincare guide I read swears by salicylic acid, but for whatever reason, my skin is just not here for it. Every single time I start using the salicylic acid for a pimple, my skin laughs and produces another even bigger pimple or pimples. Now when I get a pimple, I apply some tea tree oil directly on the pimple and just spot treat. Usually, it’s gone or at the very least, smaller the next day.

fullsizeoutput_20e

So those are the five things I stopped doing or using to improve my acne prone, sensitive skin. I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but everything I stopped doing was irritating my skin meaning all of that had to go! So if you’ve done pretty much everything you could following the normal skincare practices and still haven’t gotten any relief, then try some of these things! Thats it for today you all.

Fall Cleaning: The Vanity

Beauty, Decorating, diy, jewelry, Lifestyle, Minimalism, simplicity, Uncategorized

Happy Wednesday everyone! I don’t know if you all knew this, but I’m sort of a messy person. I’m not at all a dirty person, but I’m pretty dang disorganized. Somehow, some way I always end up with clutter in places where there should not be…like my vanity. All those cosmetic organizers and it still manages to get cluttered. When this happens, I know it’s time to start over and rethink how I organize.

When it comes to my vanity, I have to start ALL the way over and even change out the drawer liner. I’m even thinking about creating my own storage container for it because it’s just so cluttered all the time. I’m not sure if the JerryBox is working out too well. The brushes always come flying out every time that I turn it to find what I’m looking for.

Anyway, so far I’ve cleared some space by purchasing a corner shelf on Amazon. The main reason I got this was that my perfume and nail polishes were being directly exposed to the sun and I think this affects the formulations…especially the nail polishes.

IMG_0719

The shelf is pretty sturdy and it already fits my room décor. However, it is kind of cheap and not the greatest quality but it works and I really like it. Also, my perfumes and nail polishes now have a nice home away from the direct sunlight.

I typed a lot of this earlier in the day and then made my way to AC Moore to see what I could find to change up my vanity situation. I picked up some construction paper as my drawer liner and tried to look for some sort of container that had drawers.I got home and purged everything I didn’t need and cleaned off everything I did need with baby wipes. Surprisingly, I didn’t dread doing any of this; in fact, I found it pretty cathartic.

I went with the dark orange construction paper because it screams fall and looks great under my acrylic containers. I also found a jewelry box that wasn’t being used and am now using that to store my favorite rollerballs, liquid lipsticks, and lipglosses. The jewelry box is a nice touch because it’s mirrored, I wish I would have thought of this sooner.

I didn’t realize this post was going to end up being all about my vanity so I’m going to have to divide these fall cleaning posts into parts now. So that is all for today you all! Thanks for reading as always!

Smashbox Liquid Lipsticks

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, Uncategorized

Happy Monday you guys! It’s been kind of a weird day for me…maybe it’s the Monday blues or something. However, I did want to come on here and talk about this amazing lip product I happened upon.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I’m scrolling through Instagram and I see these swatches of liquid lipsticks from Smashbox. All of the colors were vibrant and they also had a super wide range.

IMG_6796

So, a couple of days later I went to Sephora and swatched some of the colors and was really shocked out how seriously pigmented and non-streaky these liquid lipsticks were. Of course, I only purchased one at first and tried it for the next few days and then went back and bought another color. I’m probably going to back to Sephora and buy another one if it fits in my budget this coming month.

IMG_6798The colors I purchased were True Grit, which is this gorgeous deep brown color, and Miss Conduct, that is a beautiful blue-based red. The liquid lipsticks are called Always On Liquid Lipsticks and they really are always on. I have eaten food and drank with these on and I still manage to have color on lips. Of course, if I wipe enough the color does come off, but that’s to be expected.

IMG_6799

Needless to say, I really love these liquid lipsticks and I’m taking them into fall and winter with me. I would like to get a nude color that I can line with Nightmoth or Currant (MAC lipliners.) I really recommend these babies if you’re looking for a nice liquid lipstick for the season! Thanks for reading!

OOTD: Happy Autumnal Equinox

Beauty, Fashion, Hair Care, Lifestyle, Minimalism, simplicity, Slow Fashion, style, Uncategorized

Happy Autumnal Equinox everyone! You all should know by now that I’m happy because this means the hot gross weather will soon be gone! Seriously, I’m getting pretty tired of sweating in places I’d rather not be sweating!

Anywho, welcome back to Fashion Fridays! It seems like it’s been weeks since I’ve posted an outfit of the day but it’s only been just one week. It seems the last few times I have worn a picture worthy outfit I’ve been in Georgetown, D.C. I really love it there because it’s so cosmopolitan, but also so historic. If you ever find yourself in the Washington, D.C. area then definitely visit Georgetown.

IMG_2162

Remember a few posts back when I was speaking of future purchases? Well, I got my hands on that perfect American Apparel tee dress. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be wearing it A LOT. I can wear it out dancing, to happy hour, or just to the coffee shop to chill or work. When I wore it to Georgetown two days ago, I was just working in the coffee shop, so I dressed it down.

IMG_9671

I paired it with some super old booties from Forever 21. I’m in need of some casual flat ankle booties or at least I will be. I can feel these boots starting to wear at the soles and that just doesn’t seem safe.

IMG_2550

I also paired the dress with a denim jacket from Levi’s…at least I started off that way. Of course around noon, it got pretty hot out and the jacket had to come off. It was even a little hot for the dress considering it is all black. I may have to pull this back out on a cooler or even cloudier day for sure.

Oh, and my curls are twisted up into cute little twists. I decided to do this one day because I was so sick of styling my hair. I also didn’t want to add extensions so this was a great happy medium for me. What do you all think?

That’s all for today! Check back Monday for a new post!

Fenty Beauty Match Stix Trio

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, Uncategorized

Just as promised, I’m talking about Fenty Beauty today! Now I had to kind of control myself and not buy a whole new foundation, highlighter or powder. I have all of those things already and I’m completely in love with my current makeup routine. However, I HAD to try something.

Of course, my dear mother was already on it and purchased the Match Stix Trio the day Fenty Beauty was released! I still would like to try the powder highlighters when I get the chance…as if I don’t already have enough highlighters as it is.

IMG_3853.JPG

So…the Match Stix trio. I think we can all see that this trio is very similar to KKW’s Contour Kit, so let’s get that out of the way. I like both pretty equally, but Fenty Beauty is far more accessible than KKW Beauty. I’m not really going to make any comparisons on the actual products especially the obvious ones but I honestly feel like all these sticks come from the same manufacturer. I may be wrong, but they really are that similar.

Onto the actual product now. Fenty Beauty’s Match Stix Trio retails at $54 which includes a contour stick, a shimmer (highlight) stick and a concealer stick. I believe that you can purchase the sticks separately which retail at $25. Also, the sticks are magnetic!

IMG_3856

The Match Stix Trio that I have is in the color Deep which is the darkest of the trios. I will say that besides the contour color the other sticks are pretty light for the darkest shades.

The contour stick: Out of the three, the contour shade (Espresso) is my favorite. I think it’s the perfect size for contouring and once it’s blended out, it gives such a nice soft chiseled natural contour. I am definitely more of a powder contour girl, but I’m a huge fan of this creamy contour.

IMG_6699.JPG

The highlight stick: I feel like I’m a highlight expert at this point…okay not really. So I like the way this highlighter (Sinamon) looks when I first apply it, but once blended it kind of just disappears. I definitely don’t mind a natural highlight for during the day, but this appears more like a bronzer. I still like it, however, I would probably go for a different shade next time. Also, I think I’ll stick to powder highlighters from now on. Fenty Beauty has a powder highlighter that I have my eye on…and it’s not Trophy Wife.

9B0FD9BA-71F1-4301-9673-6D94120D9C94

The Concealer Stick: Okay…I’m not a fan of this concealer (Suede), especially for the Deep colored trio. I wore it yesterday and it made my under eyes so oily. Also, I appeared very ashy looking and I know that was probably due to the shade. Today I went with my normal concealer and liked how my skin looked a WHOLE lot better.

Overall, I like this trio minus the concealer…so the duo. The natural contour and highlight are perfect for those days I don’t feel like doing my full makeup routine but still, want to look somewhat alive. If you’re still deciding on buying the trio, I would probably look into getting the individual Match Stix just so you don’t end up with a color that isn’t fitting for you. I do recommend the contour stick for sure without a doubt!

fullsizeoutput_20b

I hope to try some of the other products within this amazing beauty line. I may get a sample of the foundation because I’m very curious to see if they have my perfect shade! Thanks for reading, as usual, you guys. Check back Friday for another fashion post!

Shopping at Sephora on a Budget

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, skincare

Am I the only one who loves Sephora? I think not, in fact…who doesn’t love Sephora?! I think the only thing we might actually hate about Sephora is how much money you can spend when you’re in there. I think we’ve all had that moment where we go shopping for one thing and come out with more stuff than we anticipated.

However, there are ways to come out of Sephora without spending at least $100. Believe it or not, I’ve come out of the beloved store without spending over $25. Trust me, it doesn’t happen often, but it is very possible. I have come up with some tips (some no brainers, some not) that could help so you’re not spending your entire paycheck in one place. I use these tips everywhere I shop, but mainly I use them for Sephora because sometimes self-control goes out the window when makeup and skincare are involved.

  1. Save up

Well duh right? This is at the top of the list simply because it’s a huge no brainer. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to tell anybody here how to save their money (if they can) so that they can buy what they want guilt free. However, I like to save $5-$10 every week along with putting a quarter of my paycheck into savings.

  1. Go in for samples or travel kits

I never buy a full sized product unless I’ve sampled it or tried a smaller version first. It makes absolutely no sense to buy something full sized only to not like it and return it or toss it out. I personally hate returning things, but if it comes down to it then I will. If you’re especially on a budget, definitely sample it and have no shame going back in a week later to get another sample. The struggle is really real sometimes.

IMG_3827

  1. Shop with a game plan in mind

We all like to waltz into stores to “just look around,” but that doesn’t really work out too well in Sephora. So, before you go into Sephora do your research on the things that you want and go in for that specific product or products. Try your hardest not to look at anything else including the checkout trap and just walk out once you’ve purchased what you wanted. Do this at other stores as well…some of us can get really caught up in that clearance section.

  1. Shop the Sephora line

The Sephora line has really stepped up their game this year. Their masks, highlighter palettes, and liquid lipsticks are pretty amazing. I want to say that everything in the Sephora line (individually) is all under $40. You can pretty much buy your essentials with this line and come out without spending an arm and a leg.

IMG_3823

  1. Shop sparingly

Believe it or not, you actually don’t need every highlighter palette that comes out. Now, if that’s your thing then carry on and do not mind me. This tip goes hand in hand with shopping with a game plan (tip #3.) Find that eyeshadow palette that you’re going to use every color and buy just that one. Really look for your holy grail concealers and foundations and keep repurchasing them. Also, maybe consider buying lipsticks and brushes from somewhere else. I personally love the NYX Soft Matte Lip Crème’s, MAC Lipsticks, and Real Technique Brushes. I mainly purchase my foundation/concealer and skincare at Sephora and that’s about it. You’ll find that you really only go into Sephora when you need to and not just randomly. You’ll even find that some things really don’t catch your eye like they used to.

Hopefully, these were some good tips because I certainly use these all the time when shopping anywhere. I’ve saved a lot more money over the last year or two following these tips. If you have any questions then just shoot me a comment. Thanks for reading

Creating a Skincare Routine: The Basics

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, skincare

Happy Friday everyone so today I’m going to be talking about skin care again. This time I’m talking about how one can come up with their own skincare routine. I get asked by my friends all the time how I know which products to choose and what works best for my skin and even why something works for my skin.

41f301a98d0b4115684ee6db0f3b926f--spa-quotes-makeup-quotes.jpg

Most of finding out, which products work best, is to simply experiment. I’ve pretty much had acne since I was 13 and have experimented with many face washes and moisturizers since. None of my advice is new whatsoever, but it doesn’t hurt to get back to the basics every once in awhile.

So, first and foremost, you have to figure out what type of skin you have. Are you oily, dry, sensitive, normal, or combination (oily + dry?) Keep in mind that you can have oily skin that’s also sensitive and dry skin that’s sensitive. Personally, I have combination skin that is sensitive and honestly, it sucks! Once you figure this part out you can pretty much shop for products that cater to your skin type.

After figuring out your skin type, shopping for products is probably going to be overwhelming yet addictive. So, try shopping for kits and asking salespeople for samples. I like going the sample route simply because skincare can be pretty expensive and you don’t want to waste your money on something that didn’t work or you didn’t like. Always save your receipts if you can’t get a sample!

fullsizeoutput_208

Now for the fun part, narrow your products down to a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. We’ll talk about serums, acids, and oils in a later post. All of those kits and samples you tried…well its time to buy the full size of the ones that worked best for you. So basically you’re going to be looking for your holy grail skincare products that you know you can always fall back on. Of course, these products will probably change because of the seasons, aging or even formula changes.

My routine includes a stick charcoal cleanser, a balancing toner and niacinamide serum and then a probiotic moisturizer. Most days I tend to go without the serum unless I’m breaking out. These products work great for my temperamental skin and are basically my skin care saviors.

IMG_3819

I do have some extra tips that have helped me so much since I’ve gotten really serious about ridding of my acne:

  • You may not need a cleanser in the morning if your skin isn’t crazy oily or dirty.
  • Always try to remove ALL of your makeup and then cleanse and do not forget to tone
  • Be as gentle as possible with your skin – sensitive or not
  • Be consistent. Try not to change up your products too often or else you won’t know what’s truly working. Also, always wash your face at night and get that makeup off before bed.

That’s my post for today. I hope this was helpful for some of you all out there. I’ll be posting a part two (and maybe three) that includes acids, serums, oils, and masks. Thanks for reading

My Holy Grail Foundation(s)

Beauty, Lifestyle, simplicity, Uncategorized

Ok so yes I have more than one Holy Grail foundation but I honestly think everyone should. Everyone should have at least a day foundation and a night foundation at the very least. Me? I have three Holy Grail foundations, all for different reasons though. Let me explain.

So I have briefly talked about my Renewed Hope in a Jar Skin Tint on here before and let me just say…I feel the same exact way about it that I felt when I first started using it. This tinted moisturizer has never disappointed especially in these hot months. Not once has it slid off of my face or gotten really oily, unless of course, I didn’t set it with powder.

fullsizeoutput_203

Even though I despise the pump the Ordinary Serum Foundation comes in…it’s still a pretty amazing foundation. It was most definitely worth the wait and of course the $6 price tag. For $6 you’d expect a foundation to be crap, but it’s better than most foundations in Sephora. I like to wear this foundation at night, usually to happy hour or on a date. This stuff does not move or slide and the coverage is medium, so it’s not too much or too little. Also, who doesn’t love a satin finish?

fullsizeoutput_202

Last but not least, my Becca Ever-Matte Shine Proof Foundation is my end all be all. I would wear this ALL the time if it wasn’t so thick and had sunscreen in it. The finish is matte and it STAYS matte. There have been times where I didn’t even set it with powder and it still stayed on all night. If you couldn’t tell, I like to wear this foundation at night when I’m going out dancing or a special event. I can always count on this foundation to cover my acne scars and do so for the entirety of the night. I will forever be purchasing this foundation until they either change the formula or discontinue it.

fullsizeoutput_204

So those are my holy grail foundations. I have no idea if they’re going to change, but I highly doubt they will anytime soon.

What is your holy grail foundation?

The Pop & Suki Camera Bag

Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle, simplicity, Slow Fashion, style

Ok, so I never thought I’d be writing a post about a bag…like a whole post about a bag! For my birthday, my best friend got me the Pop & Suki camera bag which I have wanted for almost a year now. I was pretty close to purchasing it myself many times, but I would always put it off for something else. A couple of months ago I decided that I didn’t like the gold detailing and would prefer silver detailing instead. As soon as I saw it in person I fell in love ALL over again!

fullsizeoutput_201

Let me just say…pictures do not do this bag justice at all. If you’re on the fence about getting this bag, just do it because it is actually the coolest bag ever! I love that Pop & Suki sells different straps so that you can wear it as a fanny pack, a backpack or even a crossbody bag. They also sell accessories that you can personalize, such as key chains or charms.

IMG_6449

The quality is pretty great considering the price of the bag. The bag comes with a dust bag that comes in a box. The bag also already comes with a crossbody strap. At first, it seems like a pretty small bag, but it fits all of your essentials…as long as you don’t have big essentials.

fullsizeoutput_1fb

The personalization aspect of the company is what really won me over. Well, that and the way you can interchange the straps or add on charms and the such.

Throughout the week, I like to take the strap off and put it in my bigger tote bag so that my smaller things don’t get lost at the bottom of my bigger bag. I know it’s just like any ‘ol crossbody bag, but for some reason, there’s a certain pizzaz about this one. I think it might be the brand essence that takes this bag over the edge…the whole accessorizing an accessory aspect.

IMG_6490

The last and most obvious thing is that this bag is INCREDIBLY cute and goes with pretty much any outfit. The color my friend got for me is perfect…lavendar with pink undertones. The gold detailing doesn’t even bother me whatsoever!

I checked out the website earlier today and they have card holder…which I may have to get my hands on. Pop & Suki is really onto something and I’m in love with the brand so much!

Okay, that’s all today/tonight. Thanks for reading!
