The Art of Slowing Down

I’m back with another Glow Up Series post and today we’re definitely switching it up and talking about self-care. Well, technically we’re always talking about self-care, but I want to focus on the less physical aspect of self-care. This will probably be a shorter post, but still pretty helpful…hopefully. Keep reading if you want to know the easiest way to simplify your life.

Yesterday could have easily turned into a seriously bad day for me. I was out in D.C. with my mom at a coffee shop and we’re having great conversation and of course coffee. Out of nowhere “Mother Nature” snuck up on me and threatened to ruin my day as well as my cute jumpsuit that I was wearing. A couple of years ago, I probably would have panicked and wanted to go home immediately, instead, I took about two minutes to think about my options. I was out in the city, so there had to be some kind of drugstore or convenience store nearby. A quick Google search and a trip to the ladies room and I was on my way to CVS to buy some pads within the next five minutes.

I know this doesn’t seem like some groundbreaking story, but I have let the same situation ruin my day in the past. Taking a beat or slowing down is one of the best mindful tips that help me in stressful times. I try to do this with every aspect of my life, even if it means I’m running late. Rushing to work is something that rarely happens for me, if I’m late then I’m late. This doesn’t mean that I take my sweet ever loving time on purpose, it just means that I’m not going to elevate my stress levels and potentially put someone in danger because I’m running behind.

I also believe that if we take a little bit more time making decisions, then we won’t end up in silly emotional situations as well. Over the past year, I have started to really think my decisions through…even the little ones. I also take time to think over things that have happened like an argument and really try to understand the other person’s point of view.

The art of slowing down has helped in so many ways. It’s the reason why I have started to develop more routines and getting things done ahead of time. I believe that slowing down has made my life so much more simple and I personally think it helps reduce anxiety and potential depression. I’m not a doctor though, so I can only speak from my experience.

I know this was a departure from the rest of the Glow-Up Series, but I wanted to talk about the mental aspect of self-care…it’s actually the most important in my opinion. Hopefully, you all like this post! Leave a comment if you want to see more like this!
