The Glow-Up Series: Dewy and Glowy Skin ALL Summer Long
Welcome to the Glow-Up Series. If you read my introduction to this series, then you know that I’ll be covering skincare today! I figured since this blog has geared towards skincare for the last year or so, the first topic would be about skincare. I thought of many ways to talk about this because skincare and the products are dependent on each individual person and their skin. Keep reading if you want to see how I broke it all the way down for you guys so that you will have dewy and glowy skin all summer long!
When it comes to any kind of skin type and purchasing products, trial and error is a must. There is no one size fits all product, so it is extremely important to try out different products. I know it’s tempting to use the most affordable product, but sometimes that can be doing more harm than good. This doesn’t mean use the most expensive product, but definitely try out different brands in different price ranges.
The one tip I have learned for ANY skin type and I mention it in all my latest blog posts, is to HYDRATE your skin. Drink water of course, but also hydrate your skin with water or water-based creams, serums, or gels. I love mists and creams with hyaluronic acid for my skin that was once very oily. Yup, that’s right, even if you have oily skin, you should still hydrate and moisturize your skin. Skimping on moisturizer and buying into “oil-free” products may produce more oil. Your skin will seriously thank you once you start adding in more moisture.
Mists:
Avene – Thermal Spring Water
Evian – Brumisateur Natural Mineral Water Facial Spray
Vichy – Mineralizing Thermal Water
Hyaluronic acid :
Youth to the People – Kale + Spinach Green Tea Hyarulonic Acid
Glossier – Super Bounce
Vichy – Mineral 89 Daily Skin Booster Serum and Moisturizer
Maybe your skin is already hydrated or that’s not doing too much for your actual acne. This is where we get into acids. The very basics of course. Salicylic acid is a well-known ingredient that gets rid of acne, however, too much of it can really irritate your skin. This is where searching for the right product is really important. I went through almost every brand in Sephora minus the super high-end ones before I realized that BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids) aka salicylic acid doesn’t really work for my skin. Even certain AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) such as glycolic and lactic acid caused some issues for me.
If you read my post about why you should exfoliate your skin, then you know why I introduced these acids back in, but on a more gentle level. Acids are actually great for your skin and produce cellular renewal. I personally would avoid acid face washes because cleansers tend to strip your skin already and the added acid makes this worse. I’ve noticed that people who use acid peels, toners, and serums/moisturizers have really great results and their skin is pimple and dark spot free. Combine acids with hydration and you may never see another breakout again!
Acid Peels
Juice Beauty – Green Apple Peel
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare – Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel
Acid Toners/Serums
Glossier – The Solution
The Ordinary – Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
I couldn’t write this post without mentioning natural skincare you can find right in your kitchen and maybe your garden. I don’t DIY my skincare anymore unless I have a really bad all over face breakout. This is really just a convenience thing for me, otherwise, I’d probably be making the majority of my skincare.
If you want something that’s affordable, effective, and accessible then definitely check out these items that you can find in your kitchen or the produce aisle.
- Raw Honey (cleanser, exfoliator, mask, spot treatment)
- Aloe Vera (cleanser & mask)
- Clays (mask, cleanser, & spot treatment)
- Rosewater (toner, essence)
- Aloe Vera Juice (toner, essence)
- Apple Cider Vinegar (toner)
- Witchazel (toner)
- Jojoba Oil (moisturizer)
- Coconut Oil (moisturizer, first cleanser)
- Shea Butter (moisturizer, first cleanser)
Pretty much any one of these three practices will get you to the dewy and glowy skin life. If you combine all three then you’re well on your way to having amazing skin all year. Remember to change your linen 1 to 2 times a week and increase your plant and fruit intake to avoid even more pimples and inflammation.
I hope this was a helpful post that will get your skin back on track to being clear, dewy, and glowy! We’re all gonna shine this summer!
