Why You Should Exfoliate Your Face
About two years ago, you couldn’t get me to use an exfoliator of any kind. I was convinced that both physical and chemical exfoliators caused the majority of my breakouts. I was partially correct though. With chemical exfoliants, my skin would supposedly “purge” more bumps than I started off with. With physical exfoliants, I experienced much of the same except my pimples would just move all around my face.
Now I swear by my favorite exfoliator – The Solution by Glossier. I will occasionally use Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel, just not every day. I love the results of both because they slowly fade dark spots, they minimize pimple size, and they make my skin look naturally dewy. I still stay away from physical exfoliators because they’re just straight up irritating to my skin. R.I.P. Dark Angels by Lush.
I started back up with exfoliating because no matter what I did in my routine, I would only see temporary results. At one point my skin got so congested and completely rebelled against my whole routine. The key to using exfoliators, at least for me, is to hydrate like a mad woman. If you check out my current routine and my new-in skincare post then you’ll know that I’m always adding moisture back into my skin whether it be with mists or creams with hyaluronic acid.
Once I added exfoliation back into my skincare routine, I saw results pretty quickly. My pimples are typically minimal whenever I do include this step and my skin seriously thrives. So if I am going to use these chemical exfoliators from now on, then it’s necessary to hydrate with mists, essences, toners, and creams.
If you’ve been trying to figure out why your skincare routine is only a temporary fix, try adding in an exfoliating step. For me, physical exfoliators are a no-no, but for others, this may be the step that saves their skin from acne.

Great post! I need to exfoliate my skin more. I have sensitive skin, so it’s always hard to find a gentle one!

Thanks so much! I have sensitive skin as well. My skin surprisingly likes the Solution from Glossier – it’s gentle but effective.
Thanks for reading!
