5 Ways to Minimize Surface Clutter

You all know that I have been trying to get organized since the inception of this blog. I have struggled for a while now, but I think I’m really starting to get the hang of routines, decluttering/purging and having a home for my “things.” One of the most frustrating things that I experience is clutter on my surfaces.

I couldn’t for the life of me stop my surfaces from getting cluttered. No matter what, I’d have water bottles, bobby pins, hair ties, you name it, all on my nightstand or console by the middle of the week. I think the frustration was stemming from the fact that I thought I had to have a clear and clean surface rather than actually utilizing the surface space. So, here are the ways that I have and want to minimize surface clutter.

  1. Take up space

I know the minimal look is really popular right now, but there’s nothing wrong with big decor items. Instead of a tiny little lamp on your bedside, get a lamp that takes up more space so you don’t feel obligated to place things on your nightstand. I haven’t invested in a lamp yet, but right now my nightstand has a lamp, a small humidifier, and lotion. Right now I do still place unnecessaries on top, but once I find a nice space-taking lamp…I should be good to go.

2. Invest in plants

I didn’t really think of plants as being a decor item before, but now they’re the main focal point in my room. Certain plants are great space-takers too, especially if you invested time into growing them full or long. I have a ton of Devil’s Ivy in my space and they tend to grow long or any way you would like for them. Plants are a triple threat because they take up space, they’re aesthetically pleasing and they clean the air.

3. Get rid of it

You can’t clutter a surface if you don’t have one. This is usually my last resort because I have a big space that actually needs to be filled and an empty room looks pretty unfinished. However, this may be necessary for some and it may be a good idea to just try something different like a floating shelf or a random chair pouf depending on the space.

4. Create rules

Document what is on your surfaces when they get cluttered and create some rules around those things. At one point I had three S’well bottles on my console…why was there even more than one S’well bottle in my room? Whenever this happens, I try to limit myself by only having one water bottle or glass in my room at all times.

5. Have a home

Obviously, I mean a home for your things. This is probably one of my biggest struggles especially for little stuff like hair ties and Bobby pins. Anything small like that and it ends up just anywhere for me. Jewelry dishes or acrylic containers might be a good investment for anyone who can’t seem to keep track of their tiny hair tools

Hopefully, this was helpful to anyone out there who may be having a hard time keeping their surfaces clutter-free. Leave a comment and tell me how you keep your surfaces de-cluttered! Thanks for reading,
